Writing a Literature Review

What is a Research Topic

Research Topic Definition

A research topic is a subject or issue that a researcher is interested in when conducting research. A well-defined research topic is the starting point of every successful research project. Choosing a topic is an ongoing process by which researchers explore, define, and refine their ideas.

A Topic Is Not a Question

What is a Research Question

Research Question Definition

A research question is a question that guides your research. You want a research question that is clear and easy to understand.

The research question...

  • defines your topic
  • defines the type of research you will be doing (experimental, descriptive, exploring, explaining)
  • defines the type of questions (what, when, where, why, how) that you'll be answering
  • defines your variables
  • defines the relationship between your variables (O'Leary, 2018, p.12)
